About Memory Foam:
Memory Foam is made from polyurethane with additional chemicals that add to its viscosity level, thereby increasing the density of the foam. It is often referred to as visco-elastic polyurethane foam. Depending on the chemicals used and the overall density of the foam, it can be firmer in cooler temperatures and softer in warmer environments. Higher density memory foam will react with body heat and allow it to mould itself to the shape of a warm body within a few minutes. However, a lower density memory foam is pressure-sensitive and will mould more quickly to the shape of the body. The example often used for a demonstration of its properties, is a hand pressed into the foam and then removed, leaving a clear impression of the hand in the foam.

Memory Foam was originally developed for use in the space program. The hope was that, because of its ability to distribute pressure across the entire surface, it could ease the pressure of extreme G-forces.

While memory foam was never used in the space program, it was subsequently used in medical applications, for example when a patient suffered from pressure sores or had to be bed-bound for a long period. Hospitals and burn units for many years have used memory foam for humans to eliminate pressure points which create bed sores. Orthopedic memory foam molds and contours to your dog's body, relieving those painful pressure points which cut off circulation. The memory foam gives the sensation that you are ‘floating’ on the foam. With thousands of 'memory cells', the orthopedic memory foam pet bed gives the sensation of weightlessness, feeling as though you are suspended or 'floating' upon the foam. It was initially too expensive for general use.

In recent years visco-elastic memory foam has become cheaper to produce and is now widely
available for the home. Its most common domestic applications are mattresses, pillows and mattress toppers (also known as mattress pads). It remains useful in medical-related uses, such as wheelchair seat cushions, and pillows or padding for persons suffering long-term pain or postural problems; for example, a memory foam cervical pillow may alleviate chronic neck pain. Its heat-retaining properties are also helpful to some pain sufferers, who find the added warmth also helps alleviate pain. So, imagine what it can do for your pet. Memory foam is the ultimate pressure-relieving material. A breakthrough in sleep technology that will forever change the way your pet sleeps.

The orthopedic memory foam reacts to your the body temperature and weight to conform exactly to every curve and angle. By reacting to a very specific range of temperatures, the memory foam becomes soft where you want it -- and firm where you need it supporting the body in perfect alignment. Benefits all pets and especially beneficial to the following:
Hip or elbow displasia
Canine Arthritis
Joint problems
Large breeds
Older dogs

These materials are not memory foam and do not provide the orthopedic qualities of the true visco-elastic memory foam:
