Sizes: petite & small have plastic snaps, medium & large have metal snaps

Petite Petite size Feather Tether Bird Harness fits most Cockatiels, smaller Conures, smaller Quakers, etc. Petite size usually fits birds weighing under 100 grams. Petite size Feather Tether is not recommended for Budgies, Lovebirds, and Parrotlets due to their small size.

Small Small size Feather Tether Bird Harness fits most larger Conures, larger Quakers, Indian Ringnecks, Green Naped Lorikeets, Senegals, Hahn's Macaws, Illiger's Macaws weighing under 300 grams, Goffin Cockatoos, Timneh Greys, etc. Small size usually fits birds weighing from approximately 125-300 grams.

Medium Medium size Feather Tether Bird Harness fits most Severe Mini Macaws, Congo Greys, Amazons, Umbrella Cockatoos, Eclectus Parrots, etc. Medium size usually fits birds weighing approximately 325-700 grams.

Large Large size Feather Tether Bird Harness fits most larger Macaws, Moluccan Cockatoos, etc. Large size usually fits birds weighing from 750-1,800 grams.

The Feather Tether™ Bird Harness allows you to enjoy the company of your bird without the danger of fly-aways. The more your bird has been handled, the easier it will be to put the harness on, and the more quickly he/she will accept it. Young birds are especially easy to work with. If you are working with an older or difficult bird, here are a few tips:

  • Have another person help you during the fitting and for the first few times you put the harness on.
  • Fit the harness at a time when your bird is hungry, and use its favorite treats for distraction and reward.
  • For very agitated birds you might try covering the head.
  • Once the harness is on and properly fitted, immediately take your bird outside as a reward. Your bird will soon learn to associate the harness with the fun of going outside, and many birds become very visibly excited with anticipation when they see their harness!

Perching vs. Walking - If your bird will be primarily perching on your shoulder or another object, you'll want the leash to fall from the chest. If your bird will be walking (while you garden or picnic on a lawn), you'll want the leash to extend from the back.

How to Adjust the Harness: Use small metal slide adjustment(s) to shorten strap(s) to appropriate length. Harness should fit snugly, high up on body, but not so tight that it rubs or interferes with movement of wings. It's very important that lower strap(s) are not so loose that the bird can catch a foot in the strap. Getting the proper fit may take a few minutes or more depending on the temperament of your bird. You may wish to pre-adjust harness somewhat before you first put it on. We recommend you make adjustments while harness is on the bird - simply unsnap strap and adjust, then re-snap. Again, having another person help you (along with tasty treats) makes the whole process much easier.

Petite & Small Harnesses (Figure 8 Style):
Perching:

  1. Attach leash to D-ring; unsnap black quick release snap; slide nylon to make loop of harness large enough to easily place over bird's head.
  2. With bird facing you, place loop over the head with the leashing down the front of chest. Gently shorten neck loop until it is small enough to prevent the head from backing out.
  3. Bring the loose strap under the bird's wing, across the back, up under the other wing, and snap closed. Adjust as needed.

Walking:

  1. Follow step 1 above for "Perching".
  2. With bird facing away from you, place loop over the head with the leash hanging down the bird's back. Gently shorten neck loop until it is small enough to prevent the head from backing out.
  3. Bring the loose strap under the wing, across the chest, up under the other wing, and snap closed. Adjust as needed.

Medium & Large Harnesses
Perching:

  1. Attach leash to D-ring and unsnap all 3 bolts.
  2. With bird facing you, position cross-section (inverted "T") of harness on chest with D-ring and leash hanging down towards feet. Place the strap that now extends from the upper ring of inverted "T" to the left of the bird's neck as you face bird. Grasp bolt of single loose strap, bring around bird's neck and snap to upper ring of inverted "T".
  3. Pull two remaining lower straps forward and under each wing, and snap bolts to the two rings on bottom sides of inverted "T". Adjust as needed.

Walking:

  1. Attach leash to D-ring and unsnap all 3 bolts.
  2. With bird facing away from you, position cross-section (inverted "T") of harness on back with D-ring and leash hanging down towards tail. Place the strap that now extends from upper ring of the inverted "T" over bird's left shoulder. Grasp bolt of single loose strap, bring it around the bird's neck and snap to the upper ring of the inverted "T".
  3. Pull two remaining lower straps forward and under each wing, and snap bolts to the two rings on bottom sides of inverted "T". Adjust as needed.

CAUTION: Do not leave your bird unattended with harness on.
